Reclaiming Friday the 13th
The Origins of Friday the 13th
In earth-based matrilineal cultures, Friday was sacred to the divine feminine. It’s named for Freyja, the Norse goddess of love, war, beauty, and magic, whose energy is the embodiment of intuition and independence. The day is also associated with Venus from the Roman tradition; therefore Friday also carries deep connection with feminine power, sexuality, and fertility.
Prior to the spread of patriarchy and other feminine-oppressive systems, the number 13 was once exalted and revered. There are 13 lunar cycles in a year, so this number symbolizes the sacred rhythm of the relationship of the moon, menstruation, women, and the goddess herself. The number 13 was originally honored as a number of creation, spiritual insight, transformation, and more. In sacred circle work, the number 13 is considered magically aligned.
As patriarchal religions expanded, the efforts to suppress the feminine power and earth-based traditions made sacred sites and symbols twisted into signs of superstition and evil. The number 13 and Friday became ominous and were rebranded as unlucky as part of the propaganda to create fear in order to control and suppress earth-based spiritual wisdom.
In the reclamation of Friday the 13th, it is a day to experience as one of expanded intuition, empowerment. A time to honor the divine feminine, release the imprints of patriarchal conditioning, and reclaim our sovereignty.
When we unwind the fear of this day back to its source, we can remember the magic, mystery, and feminine essence of this sacred day. It becomes an invitation to honor our intuition, and walk our path with purpose and clarity.
Friday the 13th is also a powerful day for shadow work, breaking old beliefs, and honoring the reclamation of the true nature of the divine feminine.
